It’s very difficult to get away from a bet on SIR DANCEALOT in the Steward’s Cup on Saturday afternoon.
Three-year-olds have won the last two runnings of this frenetic sprint handicap, and he is officially 9lbs well-in if the handicapper has got him right – that is a considerable allowance.
He ran a fine race at Newmarket in the Bunbury Cup, that was over seven furlongs, but it’s no harm to have a bit of stamina in this type of race, and he is fast enough to win over six. He remains unexposed and the booking of Ryan Moore is worth a few pounds in itself to make the job easier.
It’s hard to know where the best draw will be with some of the pace drawn far side. Although, the winners have tended to come from near either rail in recent years. Sir Dancealot is drawn 24 and the stand’s side may have the fresher ground come Saturday afternoon so there is a case to made for both.
The second selection is drawn nearby in 27 and that is PROJECTION. Roger Charlton has won this race twice and his son of Acclamation could make it a third having run an absolute belter in the Wokingham, finishing first of those drawn on the wrong side of the track.
He is up 2lbs for that performance at a mark of 105, but the Wokingham has generally been a good indicator for the Steward’s Cup. The form of that race has received multiple boosts as well with the re-opposing Danzeno, Polybius, and Raucous all running well next time out.
Projection should hold the placings here based on the revised terms and although his best form has been on better ground, he has won with some cut. His pedigree offers hope as well with plenty of soft ground winners.
He was unlucky in the consolation race over course and trip last year when he finished fifth to Hoof It, and although he is 6lbs higher, this will be just his eleventh start so remains with potential improvement.
Projection has shaped like he could take a race like this and we think he is sure to go close.
