16:40 2m4f Ascot Stakes (A Handicap) (Class 2) (4yo+ 0-100)

National Hunt trainers have had a dab hand in the Ascot Stakes over the last couple of decades, but with no Willie Mullins or Irish entries it looks like it could go to a flat trainer this season. Verdana Blue is the obvious contender but is quick and not necessarily blessed with tonnes of stamina.

I like the progressive looking profile of four-year-old MOON KING for Ralph Beckett, whose horses have been in very good form since the restart. Moon King racked up a five-timer last season before being beaten in two deep-looking races at the end of a long campaign.

He returned in good style on his first attempt at two miles staying on gamely at Haydock to claim success over Blue Laureate ten days ago so he should be match fit. Moon King looks like he will have no problem on this first attempt at an extreme trip up to 2m 3f and can continue his progress up the grades with a big run.
