1pt ew Steve Rogers @25/1, Newmarket 15:50

I’m yet to tip a handicapper to date, but there’s a first time for everything and I’m keen on the chances of Roger Varian’s Steve Rogers in the Cesarewich – one of the silliest races in the calendar.

34 runners – thirty four – over 18 furlongs at Newmarket. It always feels like the official handover of between the flat and jumps seasons as the National Hunt trainers pillage the handsome prize money with their proven stayers.

The draw can be an issue and the selection is given no favours out wide in stall 33. He is highly progressive, though, and arrives in fine form off the back of a season where he’s already won five times and progressed from a mark of 62 right up to 83.

Good ground is his want and he certainly shaped as if the step up in trip won’t be an issue when getting up to win in the final strides last time out at Chester. His trainer certainly thinks so and has had this as the long-term target.

We’re on board at 25/1 each-way with multiple bookmakers offering five places.
