1pt win Black Thunder @6/1, 15:30 Sandown

I’m not a fan of tipping handicaps, but seeing my hard earned go the way of the bookies in the Welsh Grand National when my horse finished first past the post has put revenge on the agenda.

That horse was Black Thunder and the caveat is his rider wasn’t with him when ‘beating’ Mountainous at Chepstow.

He was one of many flops on the day in bottomless, specialist conditions.

He has a chance to make amends at Sandown on Saturday and the 6/1 looks worth taking in a much smaller field, where he can get into more of a rhythm with his fences.

He’s dropped a couple of pounds since Chepstow and has won over the course and distance in 2014, where he was racing off a 6lb higher mark.

This being his third start of the season, he should be race fit and if we forgive his uninspiring seasonal debut when 12th at Cheltenham on those grounds, we can expect him to be seen to his best today.

Stable jockey Sam Twiston-Davies takes the ride ahead of Unioniste, so there’s plenty of positives to go with his 6/1 price.
