1pt win Dschingis Secret @11/1, 16:35 Chantilly, Sunday

Japan’s big hope for October’s Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe, Satono Diamond, runs in Sunday’s trial at Chantilly, and the skinny odds-on quotes are tempting to take on.

This of course is just a stepping stone to the big one and he’s totally unproven against both European opposition and ground with ‘soft’ in the description, so we’ve got to try and get him beat.

He’s not run for over 300 days and his nearest market rivals, Cloth Of Stars (132) and Silverwave (70), haven’t been seen lately either so there might be some value in backing something more likely to be hard fit.

Cloth Of Stars wants the cut in the ground but hasn’t won over the mile-and-a-half trip yet, so he’s anything but solid as a 7/2 shot with no guarantee of staying the trip, whereas the potential pace angle in the race, Silverwave, is a course and distance winner and rates a better bet at 9/2.

I would probably back him if it wasn’t for the presence of the German raider DSCHINGIS SECRET, who arrives race fit after success in a Group One in his homeland last month.

Whilst German racing is nowhere near as competitive as British, Irish or French, he beat a very useful yardstick in Godolphin’s Hawkbill as well as the talented Racing History.

It was quite an impressive performance as he won going away and looked in a different class to his opponents, and his presence in this Arc trial can only mean connections feel they might have a real prospect for the big one next month.

He’s 11/1, drawn in the middle and could have the talent to land this should his opponents not be fully wound up.
