1pt win Gilgamesh @9/2, 14:00 York, Saturday

So Beloved has been competing in better company and is expected to put in a decent enough showing off of top-weight whilst Eastern Impact also looks well-treated on his old form but both haven’t won for a while.

Golden Apollo could appreciate the step back up in trip for Tim Easterby and is a course winner here at York. He has had sixteen runs already as a four-year-old so I am not sure he has that much to hide from the handicapper.

Another four-year-old in the race is GILGAMESH, who put in an eye-catching performance in the Victoria Cup a fortnight ago finishing 7/27. His effort was better than the bare result suggests having raced on the wrong side of the track, away from the pace.

But there was plenty to like about what Gilgamesh did in the final couple of furlongs to finish clear first of his group. He has won four from his first eight starts and is the most unexposed horse in the field for up-and-coming trainer George Scott, who also has James Garfield running in a Group 2 at Haydock this afternoon.

Gilgamesh’s price has probably been backed in to what is a little shorter than ideal, but he could have more to come and has a great chance of claiming the opener.

Salateen isn’t without a chance either having won last time out and is likely to set a strong gallop that should suit our selection, who likes to come from off-the-pace.
