1PT Win Lucky Beggar @9/1, Doncaster 14:35

There are a number of horses sliding down the handicap that have been entered in to this race with two-time winner Dungannon, Robot Boy, and Confessional boasting a chance on the pick of their handicap form. They have all been running below par this season and it’s hard to be confident of a notable bounce back despite their attractive ratings. Steps looks set for a big run once more and makes appeal with a 7lb claimer albeit he is a bit of an unknown quantity and experience in the saddle so often tells in these types of races.

We keep the faith with Charlie Hill’s Lucky Beggar, who is dropped 3lbs from his last visit to this track for the Portland Handicap last month. He broke smartly and raced prominently on that occasion with every chance from over 1f out. That was over 6f and his run up the stand side proved to be to his detriment as the final stages of the race developed away from him. His form is better than the bare figures suggest and a return to the minimum trip should help. This grey is 8lbs better off than Steps for his run in the Portland, should be fresher than most after a light campaign, and 9lbs below his previous handicap win making him an attractive contender.
