1pt win Old Persian @16/1, 15:00 York, Wednesday

Until they start winning again, I’m not going to be backing any of Aidan O’Brien’s runners at York this week given the yard has been under a cloud with a well-documented illness affecting the horses.

That includes Kew Gardens who was forced to miss the King George just as his season had hit top gear, courtesy of wins at Royal Ascot and Longchamp, and I fear that may have reset him.

I can’t believe the St Leger favourite will be fully tuned up for the Great Voltigeur Stakes on York’s Wednesday card, so he’s there to be taken on – not to mention his 5lb penalty.

The favourite Cross Counter looked very good at Goodwood but 7/4 is a very tight price on the balance of the rest of his form, so he’s easy enough to oppose as well.

We selected Wells Farhh Go to win last time out at Newmarket and his defeat of Loxley reads very well since that horse won easily in France, and he looks the pace angle in the race after adopting aggressive front-running tactics last time out.

5/1 might just be a good price, but if it is then surely the 16/1 about OLD PERSIAN is better?

Old Persian beat Wells Farhh Go a fair way at Royal Ascot and, though tactics had a huge say in the outcome of that race, it’s a bit of a surprise to see such a gap in their price as the Godolphin colt is 16/1.

A 3lb penalty for his win at Ascot is certainly one reason for the big price, but his run in the Irish Derby behind Latrobe has put most off.

Let’s not forget he was turned out again just a week after his Royal Ascot heroics so it can be forgiven.

I think he’s too big a price so he’s the bet.
