Spring is in the air and flat racing is back at Newmarket for the Craven meeting, with the feature Craven Stakes one of the main domestic trials for the 2,000 Guineas over the same course and distance in May.

Last year’s spoils went to a 9l winner in Masar, who went on to win the Derby, and perhaps because of that, Godolphin dominate the market this time around with the once-raced Zakouski and Group One-winner Royal Marine.

I think they’re both worth taking on at the prices as the race is full of unexposed types, many of whom have already had a run this season on the all-weather.

The booking of Frankie Dettori catches the eye on SET PIECE, an unbeaten son of Dansili for Hugo Palmer, who warmed up for this with a cosy win at Newcastle.

He’s 14/1 and, as the old cliche goes, I suspect he would be half that price if hailing from a bigger yard so ranks a good bet.

JACKSTAR also appeals at big odds of 25/1 as he has course form over 5f at Newmarket, and won his reappearance at Wolverhampton with ease.

He’s by top sire Dark Angel and possesses plenty of speed, so if staying this mile trip he should feature in the finish.
