1pt win Steady Pace @16/1, Newmarket 15:40

Thursday is the first day of Newmarket’s Cambridgeshire meeting, which hosts plenty of Group-level action over the coming days.

First up is the Group Three Tattersalls Stakes over seven furlongs. The ground is good to soft after plenty of rain and we fancy Godolphin’s Steady Pace to outrun both his name and big price of 16/1.

By Dark Angel, whose progeny excel on softer ground, we think he’ll take his already-solid form up a level encountering these conditions for the first time. Twice running credibly in defeat by rising star Shalaa – on one occasion with today’s second favourite Tasleet just a length ahead in second – before running no race behind Ajaya in the Gimcrack at York, improvement is required; however, with the ground, step up in trip and first-time hood, there are enough reasons to chance he might.

The French raider Lawmaking is feared the most with trainer Andre Fabre keen on his chances. At this level, 7/2 is no price for a horse that’s never won, though, with Tasleet looking best of the rest.
