July Festival day one selections: King Neptune (14/1)

Newmarket’s July meeting kicks off on Thursday, building up to the Group One July Cup on Saturday. Here are Thursday’s best bets.

6f (July) Tattersalls July Stakes (Group 2) (Colts & Geldings) (Class 1) (2yo)

This looks a good each-way market as there’s eight runners and a once-raced favourite that’s easy enough to take on. I’ve a lot of time for Guildsman, who ran so well in the Coventry Stakes at Royal Ascot just 11 days after his debut. He wouldn’t need to improve much to win this but I am a little dubious about the quick ground suiting him. One who will love the fast ground is KING NEPTUNE for Aidan O’Brien and Ryan Moore. He’s 14/1 – curiously a few points bigger in the betting than apparent second-string Royal Lytham – and his form with star Irish juvenile Siskin reads very well. He underwhelmed over five furlongs at Royal Ascot but that was raced on soft ground which his sire War Front’s progeny usually always hate. He simply looks overpriced and has every right to continue improving.

1pt each-way King Neptune @14/1, 14:25 Newmarket, Thursday (1-3, 1/5 with WillHill)
