Newbury Saturday tips: Extra Elusive (8/1) and Equilateral (9/2)

Newbury’s 2.20 can go to EXTRA ELUSIVE at a very backable price of 8/1.

He beat some good horses on soft ground as a juvenile, so shouldn’t fear any rain, and looked dynamite last time out on the all-weather when quickening eye-catchingly well off a slow pace.

This looks winnable as the favourite carries a penalty, whilst the second-favourite, Young Rascal, is returning from a break after somewhat falling to pieces after running in the Derby.

If his trainer Charlie Hills is right about his class, there’s a good chance EQUILATERAL is a steal at 9/2 in the 3.30.

He was among the favourites for the Group One Commonwealth Cup after glowing reports and a Doncaster win that had the wow factor, but was disappointing on the day and equally so next time out.

A dirty scope was found after Ascot and Hills’s faith he is top-class remained defiant, and dropped to five furlongs on his most recent start, he bolted up, beating a decent Stakes horse in Line Of Reason to give some strength to the form.

You might think 9/2 is a horror price on known form, but Hills has trained some awesome sprinters in recent years and knows what he’s got, while his yard was down at a 3% strike rate in June at the time of the Commonwealth Cup, and wasn’t much better during July, but he’s bounced back to form in recent weeks with a 20% strike rate and that bodes well.
