1.5pt win Distant Storm @9/2, 1pt win King's Trial @13/1, 15:35 Newmarket, Saturday

1m (Row) Betfred 2000 Guineas Stakes (Group 1) (No Geldings) (Class 1) (3yo)

I’d take on Gstaad here because his participation feels a little reactive to the flop of Albert Einstein, and towards the end of his juvenile campaign he started to look a shade exposed – albeit as very good. Bow Echo looks great but underpriced on what he’s achieved and, of the market principles, DISTANT STORM is my preference. He has to reverse the Dewhurst form with Gstaad but I don’t think he ran to the same level he did prior to that in the Tattersalls Stakes when he looked exceptional – I suspect that’s better form than Bow Echo’s. The market is giving him a strong chance here and William Buick has picked him, while his trainer has an excellent record in this race. As such I’m backing both the Appleby horses as KING’S TRAIL has looked really good in two all-weather runs and the yard aren’t playing down his chance. I suspect he will be better suited to the Derby but he will see this mile out very strongly and if he can handle the pace of the race then he has to have a big chance too, with huge potential upside.
