6f William Hill Great St Wilfrid Handicap (Class 2) (3yo+)

It generally pays to be drawn high in the Great St Wilfrid Handicap except when there is rain about. And overnight there is plenty of thunderstorms that could mean the ground is closer to soft rather than good for this famous handicap at Ripon.

The old veteran, Summerghand, is just starting to run himself into some form and is racing off a fair enough mark, but it’s rare for him to win as a favourite these days and I think he could still be a couple of pounds too high. I was trying to find a way to not back MONSIEUR KODI but it looks blindingly obvious that he is going to run a huge race and 11/2 could be quite a big price come post-time.

Richard Fahey has won this race twice and his son of Kodiac has started to progress very nicely. He looked better than ever when claiming success at Goodwood on heavy ground last time out and he may have underfoot conditions to suit. Monsieur Kodi is drawn low and he has plenty of place around him to give him a lovely toe in to the race.

One of those pacey frontrunners is SOPHIAS STARLIGHT who has been making steady progress up the handicap in her three-year-old campaign. She put in an excellent run in a fillies handicap during Glorious Goodwood and this handicap should suit this improving filly. Odds of 11/1 feel way too big for a sprinter on the up.
