1pt win Predominance @9/2, 14:50 Chester, Saturday

PREDOMINANCE went off a 6/1 favourite of the Victoria Cup, finishing rather disappointingly in mid-division. The ground may have been a bit quick for him on that occasion as he looked better than the bare result.

His striking performance at Haydock in his previous run is one still to note, and he remains very lightly raced for his age. The handicapper has not touched his mark of 96 and the return to a slightly slower surface and a smaller-field may just be the ticket for William Haggas’s charge.

He is one of the few in the race that remains open to improvement off his current mark and I actually don’t think the 9/2 about is a bad price, which reflects the fact that he has been a little ‘hit and miss’ during his career so far. Chester is a very tight track so being drawn in stall 1 should help him get the rail early with not much pace expected and so he could be given a soft lead, or at worst, a decent toe in to the race.

The other one to keep a watching brief on is Best Of Times for Godolphin. He makes his first appearance since going down to Storm The Stars over 1m 3f at Goodwood last season.

He is an interesting contender for an in-form yard, however he might prove to be a little ring-rusty on his first start for 372 days, dropping in-trip. He looked a classy sort as a two and three-year-old, but being drawn out-wide today means he will need to retain all of that class to go close off top-weight.

Miracle Of Medinah and Gabriel’s Kaka have both shaped well this season and could put in a decent run on a track that has suited them both in the past.
