High-class racing is in thin supply today with the only expected influencer of Cheltenham Festival markets being Rich Ricci’s Min, who advertises his Supreme Novices’ credentials at a prohibitively short price at Punchestown.
In Britain, the rescheduled Welsh Grand National is the feature race of a card that also features the Grade 1 Future Champions Finale Juvenile Hurdle, where the Paul Nicholls-trained Adrien Du Pont trades favourite.
I wasn’t particularly impressed with his two British hurdles runs to date so I’m taking him on, particularly as the heavy going might not suit – half-brother Clarcam is certainly better on a sound surface.
We tipped Wolf Of Windlesham to land Grade 2 honours at Cheltenham in November and he duly obliged, with one of today’s runners, Coo Star Sivola, half a length back in second.
That was on better ground than the bog he’ll encounter today, but being related to the multiple-Grade 1-winning staying hurdler Reve De Sivola, we fancy his stamina will show.
The other runner catching my eye is Borak, a flat convert who recently got off the mark at Ffos Las over hurdles on heavy ground without coming off the bridle.
Whilst that was a seemingly easy assignment, he jumps well and remains very unexposed, whilst this being such an ambitious target could be perceived as a positive.
Coo Star Sivola is no better than a fair price at 3/1, so at a much bigger price we’ll chance a small each-way bet that Borak is up to this.
