I hate backing anything with penalties in this type of race as it’s a big disadvantage – no winner has carried one in the last 10 renewals – so I’m happy to take on the talented Lusail and Berkshire Shadow, for all Lusail is the clear form horse and the right fav. I’m going left field and backing AMERICAN STAR at 40/1, even though ratings say he can’t win. He’s well entered up and has been targeted at this race for a while. Evidence on the race course has been mixed but he was green on debut and seems to be getting the hang of things. With four places each-way I think he’s worth chancing at small stakes.
