BILLESDON BROOK is a fairly confident selection for Thursday’s Group One Nassau Stakes at Glorious Goodwood – a track she’s got all-important course form at having won twice there before.
A surprise but good winner of the 1000 Guineas at Newmarket – form that’s worked out well – she was a little disappointing next time out behind superstar miler Alpha Centauri in the Coronation Stakes, but this is a significant step up in trip to ten furlongs.
That should suit as her pedigree is full of stayers, and if she can improve for the step up in trip, at a course she loves where course form often counts for plenty, she should be a formidable opponent.
Particularly so as a 9/1 shot, which I think is a bit of an insult to her form.
Royal Ascot didn’t go to plan and she was never in the race, racing most of the mile trip at the back of the field and attempting the impossible to pass most of the field to win.
Goodwood is a track for closers, though, and the extra distance should help her if similar tactics are repeated, while there are no ground concerns either.
Of the rest there’s nothing of appeal at the early prices, as they seem much of a muchness – though I do think Rhododendron has the best overall form in the race and would be a snip at 3/1 if she hadn’t bombed last time out.
She is my most likely winner but the selection is the clear value in the race.
1.5pts win Billesdon Brook @9/1, 15:35 Goodwood, Thursday
