3m2½f (3m2f70y) (New) Boodles Cheltenham Gold Cup Chase (Grade 1) (GBB Race) (Class 1) (5yo+)

A decent renewal of the great race and reigning champ Galopin Des Champs will take the world of beating if returning in the form of his Leopardstown romp. That’s not guaranteed however as he’s been beaten twice since last year’s Gold Cup and this is a race that’s frequently won on prep. It’s a small stone to throw at him but he’s already had three runs this year – one a monstrous run – and has a Gold Cup in his legs already, which can take its toll on any horse. He has to turn up in top form to win and he can’t afford to make any mistakes either. GERRI COLOMBE has always been a horse I’ve believed in and I’m taken by the way Gordon Elliott has said all season that this is the sole objective this year. Granted he was disappointing behind Galopin Des Champs but Elliott seems convinced that wasn’t his true form and I can believe that. A Gold Cup on heavy going is going to be a real slog and he’s a really strong stayer that devoured the hill when second in last year’s Brown Advisory. I think he’s an each-way bet to nothing with bookies offering four places.
