1m (Str) Al Shaqab Lockinge Stakes (Group 1) (British Champions Series) (Class 1) (4yo+)
Palace Pier is the clear form horse and has 8lb in hand with the second highest rated, Lope Y Fernandez, so it’s hard to argue too much with odds-on quotes. I think with four places each way and only 12 runners we can get a big price placed, and the one I’m going to throw a dart at is Roger Varian’s LORD CAMPARI at 66/1. He’s an enormous price as he has nearly two stone to find on official ratings, but is very talented – hence this Group One assignment – and the yard have always rated him. Watch back his course and distance win as a three-year-old and the ability is clear to see, while he gets similar conditions and can hopefully thrive again. I keep thinking him even being entered is a tip in itself and he’ll pay out a tidy sum if he can place. He’s probably the most unexposed horse in the race, for all he has a mountain to climb.
1pt each-way Lord Campari @66/1, 15:35 Newbury, Saturday (1-4, 1/5 Paddy Power)
