1pt win Labaik @3/1, 16:20 Punchestown, Tuesday

Punchestown Festival kicks off on Tuesday in Ireland and improved prize money has ensured it’s full of the jumps season’s best talents.

There are three Grade 1 races on Tuesday, featuring two Cheltenham Festival winners in Un De Sceaux for Willie Mullins, who was arguably the performance of the week in the Ryanair, and shock Supreme Novices’ winner Labaik for Gordon Elliott.

They of course contest separate races with LABAIK coming first, and he’s up against the horse he beat into second at Cheltenham, our selection at the time Melon.

Labaik is the bigger price at 3/1, and I’ve got to have some of that.

He beat Melon fair and square and he’s got to be the superior horse until proven otherwise.

Bookies are sometimes wrong, but they’ve got good reason to price him up longer as Labaik is a serial non-starter, twice refusing to race in his two starts prior to that big Cheltenham upset, and twice more in his past career on the flat.

If he doesn’t start then your bet loses.

Whilst it’s a valid concern, I’m just not comfortable not backing a horse for that reason after such a brilliant performance at Cheltenham, so he’s the bet.

1pt win Labaik @3/1, 16:20 Punchestown, Tuesday (Betway)
