1m FanDuel Breeders’ Cup Mile presented by PDJF (Grade 1) (3yo+) (Turf) (3yo+)
This one is as good as it gets and the Europeans, looking for their sixth win in seven years, have a really strong hand again. The draw here will matter as the first bend comes up really fast and most of the fancied European runners are drawn low. I was torn between Foret winner Ramatuelle and PORTA FORTUNA but the former’s scratching makes my mind up. Porta Fortuna has been on a roll, landing three consecutive Group Ones against her sex and has Breeders’ Cup and 1,000 Guineas seconds also on her CV. She loves fast ground and has everything you’d typically look for going for her, so I’d be firmly with her at 4/1 from a decent post in stall six. I’ll play two in the race and my gut is screaming we’re about to see what DIEGO VELAZQUEZ is really made of. He’s a proper fast ground performer and has started to fulfil the promise of his juvenile season now dropped to a mile, winning his last two events at Leopardstown. He’s certainly more of a staying miler but is drawn nicely in stall four and Ryan Moore can slot him in on the rail, ideally behind the leaders. I think he’s been underestimated in the betting at 9/1.
1pt win Porta Fortuna @4/1, 1pt win Diego Velazquez @9/1, 23:45 Del Mar, Saturday
