1pt win The Black Princess @7/1, 14:55 York, Thursday

A deluge of rain has followed a bone-dry spring in Britain, degrading the going at York’s Dante meeting to soft.

As always, that throws a spanner in the form book and I can see John Gosden’s THE BLACK PRINCESS taking full advantage of conditions in the 14:55.

It’s a top-class race with Group One winner Sir Michael Stoute’s Queen’s Trust setting the standard as well as the classy So Mi Dar, also for Gosden – but both are making their seasonal reappearances and are entitled to need the run.

The Black Princess has run and won already this season, landing Group Three honours in France, and is proven in soft ground.

Her best run is arguably his Ribbesdale Stakes third in similar conditions at Royal Ascot last season where, enduring a nightmare trip, she was caught wide in a large field and lost a decisive number of lengths by fanning widest of all when turning for home.

She beat Queen’s Trust a neck that day so there aren’t too many reasons to expect a reversal of form with the fitness advantage and recent form in the book.

The market is speaking in her favour ahead of the race, having been cut from 10/1 to a general 6/1, with Coral still laying 7s.

That looks well worth chancing.
