2pts win Profitable @5/2, 15:35 Goodwood, Friday

It’s been a miserable week for punters and racegoers at Glorious Goodwood after torrential rain turned the track heavy and saw a sea of non-runners.

Bookies have been having the best of things with huge-priced winners going in left, right and centre, and punting remains perilous going into the penultimate day.

Regardless of the ground, the Group Two King George Stakes over five-furlongs has attracted a very strong field, and it’s very difficult to ignore the claims of Clive Cox’s PROFITABLE, who is the clear class horse and has done the business on soft ground before.

Winner of the Group One King’s Stand Stakes at Royal Ascot on very soft ground last season, as well as the Palace House Stakes and Temple Stakes on good-to-soft, the only real reasons to doubt his credentials on that evidence would be a bad draw, a Group One penalty or a loss of form this season.

He has none of those and was closest to brilliant King’s Stand winner Lady Aurelia at Royal Ascot, so is clearly in good heart.

He’s had a fair break since Royal Ascot and there’s little doubt his main target is the Nunthorpe Stakes at York later this month, but I’d be surprised if he were beaten in this – particularly given the stable are in confident mood.

5/2 is perfectly fair and I’m taking it.

Of the rest the clear danger is Battaash, who looked brilliant last time out but has to prove his effectiveness on such slow ground as this.

I’d rather the proven Group One form any day, given they are quite close in the market, while the other class horses like Marsha, Take Cover and Priceless should all hate the ground.
