We’ve been in rare form the last few weeks to firmly banish the memory of a frustrating end to the jumps season, and a huge Derby day double at Epsom yesterday, courtesy of 20/1 Masar in the Derby and 7/2 Century Dream earlier on the card, meant we finished the meeting +28.25pts with three wins from four bets.
That’s actually three years in a row now we’ve tipped the Derby winner at double-digit odds, following 11/1 Harzand in 2016 and 40/1 Wings Of Eagles last year, and if the treble were possible it would have paid 10,330/1!
Shameless brags aside, there’s more good news as the French Derby takes place today at Chantilly and it’s very difficult to ignore the claims of French 2000 Guineas winner OLMEDO – who the observant of you may have noticed we rather like.
7/2 just looks a nice price for the form horse in the race – he actually finished narrowly ahead of English Derby winner Masar at Chantilly last season – while a draw in stall one, though tricky, isn’t much of a negative.
Chantilly is a tricky turning track so a spot on the rail is always favourable, but it’s the relatively short home straight that can cause chaos if you’re looking for a run through the pack.
A lot will need to go his way and there’s more than a hint of de ja vu as he tries to complete the same Guineas-Derby double as his same connections’ Brametot last year.
He looks the class horse and the ground is okay for him, but a strong case can be made for Hey Gaman too.
Second to the selection in the French Guineas, he is bred to stay and 18/1 is a very dismissive price considering that form looks solid.
A wide draw is the negative but that’s more than factored into those odds and I wouldn’t want to put you off backing him – it’s just I’m certain Olmedo is the classier horse.
1pt win Olmedo @7/2, 15:15 Chantilly, Sunday
