2m4½f Unibet You’re On Goodwood Handicap (Class 2)
This is a competitive looking renewal of this staying handicap. True Destiny heads the market at 4/1, but isn’t that solid a favourite.
You’d expect Summer Moon to set the pace in this and he’s entitled to bounce back from a disappointing performance last time out when stepped up to pattern company. The time before that, he ran a fine race in the Ascot Stakes behind the reopposing Couer De Lion who is effectively 5lbs higher here.
The one who finished a close fourth in that race was SMART CHAMPION, who was a mile back in the field when approaching the turn. He arguably stayed on best of all in that race at the line over 2m 4f on softish ground and conditions are likely to suit him much better here.
Smart Champion can be excused his last run in the Northumberland Plate as he got no luck in running out wide and that race came too soon after Royal Ascot. He comes into this a bit fresher and remains with potential off a very fair mark of 89.
