I’m backing MEDIEVAL in the 14:35 Group Two at Goodwood, a seven-furlong heat for two-year-olds.

It’s going to be the fastest ground he’s raced on as both starts, a maiden win at Newbury and then fourth in the Coventry Stakes at Royal Ascot, were raced on soft ground over six furlongs.

Trainer Paul Cole is unconcerned by the going and encouraged by his Ascot run, where he missed the break and probably lost the race in the first furlong.

He stayed on well to place fourth and this extra furlong should suit.

The Coventry form has been franked since with Mehmas winning a Group Two at Newmarket, so signs are there that he’s been generously priced at around the 16/1 mark.

A wide draw of 10 is far from ideal and he’ll likely have to slot in and attempt to pick up the pieces.

The two favourites War Decree and Boynton are obvious threats but the latter has to saddle a 3lb penalty for his win in Newmarket’s Superlative Stakes, and most of the horses that ran in the Coventry – namely the selection – are still unexposed enough to question their value.

Thunder Snow is another who didn’t have things his way in the Coventry, racing on the stand side away from the pace, and could be seen to much better effect on this quicker ground.
