0.5pt each-way Wolf Of Windlesham @16/1, 15:35 Ascot, Saturday

I’m in no mood to abandon WOLF OF WINDLESHAM in the newly-named Wessex Youth Trust Handicap Hurdle at Ascot on Saturday, after he was twice a winner at big odds for these pages last season and was traveling like a dream when coming down two out in the Greatwood Hurdle at Cheltenham last month.

He was my pick at 40/1 for that race and certainly looked set to outrun his odds before his fall.

He’s since been seen in handicap company on the flat at Kempton, coming second with a good run on the polytrack.

Pre-race comments by his likable trainer Stuart Edmunds suggest this Ascot assignment is very much the main target and we can expect him to be primed to run for his life.

I thought he was well handicapped at Sandown at the end of last season when he won off a mark of 137, so racing off that exact same mark this season it’s hard not to conclude he remains well handicapped.

Good ground is definitely what he wants and it’s looking like he’ll get it at Ascot, so off a lovely racing weight of 10-13 he’s got to be backed each-way at 16/1 with five places offered by Paddy Power.
