1pt win Luminate @10/3, 13:35 Saint-Cloud, Sunday

Aidan O’Brien broke Bobby Frankel’s long-standing record for most Group One wins in a season on Saturday, and he’s now out to extend that record with runners in France today.

Nelson, whose sire Frankel is named after the legendary trainer, had his form comprehensively franked in Saturday’s record-breaking Racing Post Trophy at Doncaster, as Roaring Lion, the horse that so narrowly beat him at Newmarket last time out, ran a blinder to finish second in that Group One.

Yet Ryan Moore has chosen to ride Delano Roosevelt, who I’m not sure has the strongest form claims, yet must have progressed and impressed at home to be the stable’s first string.

The O’Brien hype this season and the lack of quality French horses has probably had an impact on the betting markets for this, and there’s a fair case to be made for the home team’s LUMINATE to have the best form.

Proven on soft ground and a runaway winner of a recognised trial for this, where today’s opponent Stage Magic was well beaten, I find it telling that Ryan Moore has given her such a strong shout in his Betfair column by labeling her the one to beat.

Outside of Arc day, O’Brien isn’t quite so dominant in these French Group Ones as he is elsewhere, where he certainly appears to keep his very best prospects for the Irish and British Group One calendar, so I’m chancing that these are not his best two-year-olds and Luminate is overpriced.
