2 Pts Win Awesome Power @4/1, Unibet Handicap, Newmarket 15:45

The July meeting at Newmarket always throws up some scintillating, high quality thoroughbred action. It signifies that the flat campaign is in full flow with Royal Ascot behind us and an intriguing King George ahead of us; definitely a good opportunity to get stuck in with us here at 2ptswin.

The Unibet Handicap Class 2 for 3YO at Newmarket looks a decent contest with a couple of lightly raced unexposed horses in Muntadab and Awesome Power leading the betting in the market. Both are on the upgrade with each having won last time out at Sandown. They represent in-form yards in Stoute and Haggas respectively with the well-backed Muntadab beating subsequent winner Banditry in his previous race and is currently favourite. In contrast, Awesome Power wasn’t widely fancied at 8/1 in his last contest but dispatched of a couple of decent looking colts and the form looks fairly solid (2 – 2nd, 1 – 3rd, 1- 4th, from 4 runs) – both horses have been raised accordingly by the handicapper.

The Queen’s horse looked very smart when finishing strongly up the Esher hill over 9f, having to be switched left to weave through some traffic, before picking up nicely to win going away by 1.5 lengths despite being off the bridle a little bit earlier than others. He looks sure to enjoy the step up to 10f and has plenty of scope to improve upon his first run of the year for William Haggas whose horses have come on immensely from their first races this year. Awesome Power can overcome his 8lb rise which probably underestimates his true potential against a few moderately exposed horses in this race. Rotherwick ran a decent fifth in the Britannia at Royal Ascot and can pick up the pieces if the market leaders falter with racing experience on his side and he is generally priced at 12/1 for each-way punters.
