2pts win Townshend @5/2, 15:15 Kempton

Willie Mullins’s horses were in fine form at the Cheltenham Festival, as he and Ruby Walsh racked up seven wins.

One horse we’d been keeping close track of after his stable tour and a promising stable début behind Squouateur at Fairyhouse is TOWNSHEND, who was expected to run in yesterday’s County Hurdle at Cheltenham but lines up at Kempton today instead.

Crucially, Ruby rides him and his British handicap mark of 135 could be very lenient considering the market confidence behind his last start, where he travelled really well and was entitled to not get home given he’d not had a run.

Information is scarce as to why he was withdrawn on Friday, and the presumption is this was plan B.

Regardless, this is a softer race and I suspect he’s destined for greater things as his colourful owner, Rich Ricci, probably has a limited interest in purchasing horses for handicaps like this.
