Sandown Saturday tips: Ga Law (13/2), Nickolson (10/1)

1m7½f  (1m7f119y) Planteur At Chapel Stud Henry VIII Novices’ Chase (Grade 1) (GBB Race)  (Class 1) (4yo+)

No Shishkin in the line up but a fascinating novice chase nonetheless with a couple of 2pts win favourites. Allmankind surprised many when bolting up on chase debut at Warwick and is the highest rated going into this. He got a form boost recently courtesy of Zanza and there aren’t many reasons to doubt that he can be a better chaser than hurdler now he’s proven he can jump fences. This race will be all about jumping at speed so I can’t have the clumsy Hitman who doesn’t look a natural. I took an early price on Eldorado Allen who was 11/2 earlier in the week for this, but he’s been clipped into 3/1 now which looks fair at best, and Allmankind is hardly a big price either. The one that appeals most as a bet is GA LAW, who has come from nowhere this season to rapidly earn a mark of 150 over fences at the tender age of four. He jumps brilliantly, stays well and is totally unexposed so is well worth a try at 13/2.

2m  (1m7f216y) Betfair Exchange December Handicap Hurdle (Listed Race)  (Class 1) (4yo+ 0-150)

Mister Coffey needs to improve again to win now up 10lb to 138 and I wouldn’t put it past him, for all he looks more of a chaser in the making. At the prices I’d rather side with Olly Murphy’s NICKOLSON at around the 10/1 mark. He’s very inexperienced but has shown a good level of form and clearly carries a lot of stable confidence having been odds-on on debut and even money on his next two starts. He bumped into a good one in Ribble Valley on his reappearance this year, who went on to run well behind Epatante in the Grade 1 Fighting Fifth last weekend. Nicholson is by the same sire as Epatante and was dropped 1lb for that run, so with fitness on his side there’s every reason to believe him capable of running better than his mark of 134. With heavy ground a concern he’s a win only bet.

1pt win Nickolson @10/1, 15:35 Sandown, Saturday
