Doncaster’s St Leger meeting is underway and last season’s St Leger winner SIMPLE VERSE is back on Town Moor running over the same course and distance as that Classic success.
She followed it up with another Group One win in the fillies’ race on Champions Day at Ascot last October, so clearly thrives at this time of year and very much rates the class horse in this fillies’ Group Two.
The fact that she’s not favourite and can be backed at 9/2 is on its own enough reason to play – and the favourite, Abingdon, has all her own form on good-to-firm ground so isn’t certain to go in today’s good-to-soft conditions.
Simple Verse is well clear of the field on ratings and has to be backed at the prices.
The tempter is Simple Verse’s stablemate Alyssa, who is seeking a fourth win in a row.
Ralph Beckett’s progressive filly matches a very similar profile to her more decorated colleague and can be backed at a nice price at 10/1.
Fillies can just keep on improving at this time of year and, with stamina seemingly assured, she could be worth siding with too.
I’ve decided to back both.
