6f Coventry Stakes (Group 2) (Class 1) (2yo)

This looks a hot renewal of the Coventry and tricky as ever for punters. I’ve tried to contextualise the limited form we have through sectional timings – widely available for British racing but not in Ireland – and whilst Bradsell was a big eye catcher at York, the sectionals tell of a race where the pace collapsed and he simply stayed the best but was slowing down late on. The clock favours the leading British hope Persian Force as he ran a favourable time compared to the 3yo sprint earlier on the card, despite carrying more weight. He clearly knows his job and wants to win. However, the market has a lock on his price and I fancy the best bet in the race to be the Aidan O’Brien second string AGE OF KINGS, who certainly isn’t running to make up the numbers. He’s got the best pedigree in the race and was mightily impressive on his second start, stretching clear and devouring the stiff finish at Curragh in a time that compares very favourably with the other sprints on the same card. He’s shown pace and looks to have plenty of stamina so I’ll have him at twice the price of his stablemate, Blackbeard, who’s shown a similar level of ability but has a sexier unbeaten profile.
