1pt win Fox Norton @6/1, 15:55 Ascot, Saturday

Despite picking Waiting Patiently for last year’s renewal of the Ascot Chase, which he duly won, he looks a horse to take on this time around having run just the once this season when lucklessly unseating in the King George.

He’s a short price and this looks a deeper field than last year, when he beat an ageing Cue Card, and that has to be slightly questionable form.

Politologue has some excellent form to his name and would not be a surprise winner, while his stablemate Cyrname looks an improved horse this season and likes the track.

I’m going with an old favourite in FOX NORTON on price grounds, as he’s got just as good form as anything in this race and returned from a long absence to run a very creditable second behind Altior on his reappearance.

I thought he was a potential Gold Cup horse last year but injury intervened, and with no real evidence to suggest he’s a lesser horse this year I make the 6/1 a clear value bet – though I’m certainly not expecting him to win with every runner having a plausible chance.

Aso is a very interesting runner but it’s difficult to see him not finding at least one of the above named too good.
