2pts win Might Bite @11/10, 15:00 Haydock, Saturday

Gold Cup 1-2 Native River and MIGHT BITE face off in the Betfair Chase on Saturday, as Grade 1 action over jumps returns to Britain. With ex-star Thistlecrack and the up-and-coming Clan Des Obeaux also in opposition as well as last year’s runaway winner Bristol De Mai, it’s a seriously hot renewal.

Native River simply outstayed Might Bite in the Gold Cup, and handled the heaviest section of the track the better when hitting the home straight, but this is a significantly shorter trip on far better ground, so Might Bite has a favourite’s chance of reversing the form.

I’m clear in my mind that Might Bite is the classier horse, and with everything in his favour the 11/10 about him winning looks more than fair. It’d be great to see Might Bite return to his front-running best and string them out like washing, but that seems unlikely.

Clan Des Obeaux would be the improver at a price to take him on with, but he’s being asked to step up to the class of a Gold Cup winner, and that’s a very big step. Might Bite is a fairly confident selection.
